On Saturday, December 14th, Renzo Gracie Clarksville (RGC) proudly hosted our Winter Seminar and Belt Promotion ceremony, a momentous occasion for our community of martial artists. Led by the esteemed Professor Reginaldo Almeida, a 4th-degree black belt and owner of Renzo Gracie Spring Hill and Renzo Gracie Columbia, this event celebrated dedication, growth, and perseverance on and off the mats.

Joining Professor Reginaldo were RGC owner and head professor James Hoskins, alongside fellow RGC black belt instructors Professors Zee Durham and CJ Garza. The event also welcomed back former RGC black belt instructors Christian Arellano, Dave Powell, Jared Jackson, and Patrick Yates, making it a true family reunion of talent and camaraderie.

The ceremony was elevated by heartfelt speeches from our newly promoted black belts, each sharing their unique journeys and lessons learned:

Professor Valentino Briones reflected on his return to jiu-jitsu and how it profoundly impacted his life. He honored his fellow black belts and dedicated his achievement to his late father, a touching moment that resonated with everyone present.

Professor Michael Whalen humbly shared his experiences of stepping away from and returning to jiu-jitsu, emphasizing the importance of persistence. His advice, “Come back” and “Live up to your own standards, not anyone else’s,” struck a chord with the audience.

Professor Carl Lawler delivered a gratitude-filled speech dedicated to God, his training partners, and his professors. He encouraged his peers to “stay in love with jiu-jitsu” and to “chase the knowledge, not the belt.” In a touching gesture, he presented a bouquet to his wife in appreciation of her unwavering support throughout his martial arts journey.

Professor Carlo Serrano received his black belt from his original training partner, Professor James Hoskins, in a deeply moving moment. Professor Carlo shared reflections on his faith and the gift of jiu-jitsu, recalling advice from mentors like Professor Zee Durham and Dave Powell. His speech highlighted the transformative power of BJJ and the value of community.

A Legacy of Growth and Excellence

Renzo Gracie Clarksville has come a long way since its beginnings as a small class at the former Circuit Fitness, growing to become a thriving community through the years. This growth was evident in the more than 50 attendees who celebrated these achievements.

Professor Reginaldo Almeida closed the ceremony with powerful words: “You weren’t given belts; you earned them.” He reminded everyone that growth comes from stepping outside of their comfort zones, both on the mats and in life.
